The government has responded to calls to expand funding to facilitate video and telephone counselling. This is referred to as Telehealth.
From tomorrow, EVERYONE can receive video and telephone psychological support rebated by Medicare. This is a positive step and means that people who would benefit from extra support are now able to do so. This includes people who have been attending counselling and those that are new to counselling. People will need a mental health care plan.
It is true that Telehealth psychology sessions are different to face-to-face sessions however we all need to adapt to the health crisis and make some modifications to what we would usually do, particularly given the uncertainty about how long this crisis will go on for. With video counselling, we still sit together but in different places. It is a tough time and it is important to reach out for help.
In my practice, for the protection, health and wellbeing of patients, staff and their extended networks, I will be offering video and telephone counselling to stay connected and provide support.
